Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), which constructs two- or three-dimensional images of a landscape or an object, are highly regarded for their ability to “see” through cloud cover, inclement weather, and at night. SARs are used in surveillance, search and rescue, mapping, tracking and more. Until recently, one downside to SARs was the difficulty in deploying them on small satellites. But with modern, micro-electronic components, small satellite constellations can now take full advantage of SAR imaging.

AI and machine learning will transform A&D in dramatic new ways. From design to manufacturing, to flight management and MRO, these new intelligent systems have the potential to usher in a whole new era of aerial automation. In June 2019, SAE International announced the formation of a new AI standards committee which, through industry consensus, will guide the development and application of new AI technologies. Is the flying car of classic science fiction out the question? We don’t think so.  

No longer a disruptor, 3D printing has found a place in A&D. Additive Manufacturing enables fast and accurate fabrication of complex parts, giving designers the ability to rapidly prototype, thereby optimizing R&D. 3D-printed RF antennas, sensor arrays, and multilayer cable assemblies are just a few examples of parts being produced using the technology. AM also reduces material waste and contributes to fulfilling the mandate to reduce size, weight, power and cost, which in turn reduces fuel consumption.
